Kites as an alternative to wind turbines

No items found.

For many, flying kites is one of the fondest memories from childhood. Now modern kites ( kites ) can be used to generate energy from wind. This has significant advantages over wind turbines: First, kites can fly much higher than wind turbines and thus benefit from much more constant winds. Second, kites do not require foundations and consume fewer resources in production.

EnerKite GmbH builds airborne wind turbines with kites. Using a kite launched from a ground station, wind is converted into electricity at heights of up to 300m. At these heights, winds are much more steady than at the height of conventional wind turbines. In addition, the ultralight kite can fly and generate energy even in very light winds. New materials and intelligent control technologies make this possible.

Developing a flying wind turbine is anything but child's play - quite the opposite of flying a kite. EnerKite's engineers have been developing their flying wind turbines since 2016 and are currently preparing to launch the EK200 series product. In addition, various pilot projects are planned: Among other things, a pilot for a location-flexible and infrastructure-independent e-car filling station is to be set up with Volkswagen.

EnerKite's next goal in the .GUT community is to fly an EnerKite prototype on the tarmac of the former Tegel Airport.
